Is it necessary?
Recall your school days. Remember the days when you studied the alphabet and learnt how to group them together to form words and then grouping these words into comprehensible sentences. Reading & writing form one of the most things that children are taught during their basic education years.
As a dutiful parent it is your bounden duty to teach reading & writing to your kids. You should prepare them so that they are able to read simple sentences from magazines and newspapers.
Apart from that they should also be able to spell the words correctly. After all what is the value of education if one does not know how to communicate. One might be able to communicate via words, but that by itself is just not enough.
Developing confidence
As your kid grows up, it is your duty to see that they have confidence in themselves. A decent knowledge of reading & writing plays a long part in building up the confidence level of any child. In fact these 2 limbs of education are considered to be one of the most important.
You can see the gleam in the eyes of your kids and they spell out new words, words that were hereto alien to them. The same stands true for writing. When your kids grow up, they will look with nostalgia at the letters they had wrote to you when they were young. These are invaluable items.
Reading & writing does not mean just being able to perform these two basics. One needs to be able to spell properly and should be able to write flawlessly. There are other important points like a proper handwriting.
There are many educational aids that will help your child to improve their writing. Simple, colorful books with large letters & descriptive images will help your child to pick up reading quickly. They can identify the objects and therefore will find no problems relating to it and later on reading it out.
